Nine British soldiers have been injured in Afghanistan as a British helicopter mistakenly opened fire on their own troops, an official says.

The incident happened in Helmand province on Wednesday in the confusion of a rapidly changing situation, the British Ministry of Defense said on Thursday.

One soldier was seriously injured and has been sent back to Britain, according to a defense spokesman.

Two others are still in the medical facility at Camp Bastion, located northwest of Lashkargah and the remaining six soldiers have returned to duty, the spokesman said.

An investigation had been launched into the incident and the families of the injured had been told of the 'friendly fire' episode, the defense ministry said.
