"I personally believe, based on what I have seen, that right now Iran has the ability to reach most of Europe. Right now. And they just haven't demonstrated it yet," Lt. Gen. Henry Obering said in an interview with DPA on Monday. Obering also claimed that Iran could develop missiles by 2015, which would be capable of hitting targets inside the United States. Obering's comments come, while the US is using Iran's recent military exercise as a pretext to justify its plans of deploying missile defense systems in Europe, despite Russia's strong opposition. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has blasted Washington for planning missile defense systems in 'Russia's doorsteps' and has said that the US is chipping away at the foundations of the security arrangements established in Europe at the end of the Cold War. The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) test-fired advanced ballistic missiles in a military exercise dubbed as The Great Prophet III, in response to increasing Israeli and US threats against the country. Iranian military officials stressed that the maneuver was carried out for defensive purposes and was not aimed at threatening any country. AGB/MGH/MMN |
